  1. The first original Alexa Classic is 16:9, but some of the later versions of the Alexa Classic series has the 4:3 options
  2. With the current world wide coronavirus lockdown, and the slowing down of the economy, then many people might be using their newly found free time to sort through and get rid of their older gear for some extra cash
  3. Years and years ago ARRI was talking about bringing out an affordable "ALEXA Education" camera which was 720P S16 (good for educational institutions which had lots of S16 sitting around unused! And this camera would only be sold to educational institutions). This camera would be identical to their Alexa Classic cameras, just limited to only doing a smaller 720P cut of their sensor. A pity this was never done, as it would have been smart to get young keen students to have lots of hands on experiences with ARRI cameras. As what they start out on, they'll keep on using into the future once graduated as well.
  4. ARRI CPO cameras sell for a fair chunk extra than what they go for in private / eBay / FB / Craiglist sales, might be a long wait until an ARRI CPO Mini is sold for sub $25K!
  5. In general I agree with you. And if you're working in house / producing your own work, then you can use almost any camera under the sun! Even your iPhone???? Although I would make a point about this: "Other people might be shooting endless music videos, in which case you may be the only person involved who even knows what an F3 is." I'd definitely got for a Sony FS700 over a F3 for only a couple of hundred bucks extra. As slow motion is so so so essential for most folks who are "shooting endless music videos". (while the genlock / timecode / etc features of the F3 doesn't matter for low budget music videos) A Sony F3 could potentially still be a good investment for a jobbing DP, so long as they've already got a FS7/F5 as their A Cam, then a F3 for next to nothing could be a good bargain by to throw up a B or C Cam for interviews. Personally my limited camera work is plays distant second fiddle to my work as a production sound mixer. I purchased my Sony PMW-F3 years ago, just at the point at which the F3 had lost the bulk of its value. While my F3 has continued to decline in value over the years, it has been a very gentle decline. So was a good timing for me to buy in on the F3 when I did! Suspect that time will be soon for the FS7 as well, sooner rather than later (before this coronavirus inflicted economic crisis is over) we'll be seeing FS7 cameras sell for sub US$2.5K but they'll still have a lot more life left in them.
  6. Of course it isn't just the camera which matters. But you'll often see jobs advertised in which it says something like "Sony FS7 owner/op wanted", of course if you don't have the experience / showreel appropriate for the job then you won't get it, no matter what camera you have. But likewise if you've got a C300mk1, or EVA1, or heck even an AMIRA (!) you're likely to face a steep uphill battle to be hired over someone who does tick all the boxes without any fuss. Have only once (twice if you also count a web series shot on an FS7, which did the pick ups on my F3) done a job which was advertised as "FS7", but I convinced them my F3 is just as good as it was just being shot in HD.
  7. Of for sure, if you're being hired as a cameraman for the camera you own than an F5 is going to be better than the F3 which has no demand whatsoever for it at the moment. Heck, it probably makes better financial sense with your ROI to own even a FS7 instead rather than either a F5 or F3! As the FS7 is the most popular in demand camera ever at the moment, and their prices are becoming incredibly affordable at the moment on eBay
  8. TELL US MORE!! :-o Being able to record 10bit 444 (or even 422) internally without an external recorder, would make the F3 almost perfect for me! F3 is dirt dirt cheap! Easy to find a F3 for sub US$1K, while even the cheapest F5 will be over US$4K That's a huge price difference.
  9. https://noamkroll.com/building-a-more-affordable-alexa-with-arri-cpo-leica-r-lenses-the-leitax-mount/ Exactly what I've been talking about in the past! Arri Alexa Classic + Affordable Glass
  10. Go for Nikon Z6!! Not only is it already a great camera, it is also the only stills camera which can output raw video!
  11. Have coming up soon my first shoot with Super 35mm film, for which I will be the sound recordist for this film. And am wondering what should I do and recommend for ease of post for them afterwards? (of course there is always the slower manual way of lining up slate IDs for each take, and we'll of course do that as a back up resort but hoping we can use a better option?)I've been doing research myself, but it seems there are a fair few variations/opinions here. (and I should get in touch with their development house as well? To see if they can handle AatonCode or ArriCode or whatever it is that the camera has as an option, which I'll spend a tech day on next week to see the cameras in person so I can get a better feel of exactly what it is I am dealing with)I do know that of course the Arri 235 is a MOS camera, as it will be very very noisy. But they have to use the Arri 235 for all their indoor shots which will all be done on a steadicam, for which their Arri 35BL is too heavy. However I will still be recording audio throughout, so they've got a good reference track to do their ADR with. Very keen to hear from others any advice or experiences!
  12. Yeah but that is something the could/should have just given as a firmware update to the FS5 mk1!
  13. REDs are well built fans, if rather overly noisy. Oh, and they have a camera attached to their fan!
  14. If you just want "an ARRI" then buy a classic on eBay, they're selling for a song! But if you're getting paid work worth of an ARRI and have rentals lined up? Then this decision should be easy for you, and you should already know the answer yourself without needing to ask us!! (hint: it is the Mini) But the fact you're needing to ask which to buy, very strongly indicates to me that you should *NOT* be buying an Alexa. Get yourself a Panasonic EVA1 or URSA Mini Pro G2 or Sony FS7 instead.
  15. People are way too obsessed over if a camera is "global shutter" or not. Basically NO CAMERAS have this! (which are S35 & used on big budget modern films that is, with the possibly exception of the Sony F55 that is used on some) So clearly people are getting upset over something which 99% of us live with just fine. What is more important is to look at *how much* rolling shutter does it have? A Sony a7S has lots! While an Arri Alexa has very little. The latest URSA Mini Pro G2 has very very *very* little rolling shutter at best, is right up there with an Arri Alexa
  16. The Fujifilm is basically identical in price to the BMPCC4K, and the Panasonic GH5 is only a couple of hundred dollars more. And the Z6 & E2 are still sub $2K as well. Most importantly, these are all cameras you can buy TODAY if you wish
  17. We're spoiled for options! At around about that price point or a little higher (but still all sub $2K) we have: Fujifilm X-T3 (lovely Fujifilm colors! 10bit 4K internal) Panasonic GH5 / GH5S (rock solid workhorses that are packed with features) Z Cam E2 (4K 120fps!! And recently got a firmware update for ProRes) Nikon Z6 (4K raw output from a vistavision sensor!)
  18. Can you share more about how you can do affordable DIY development and digital scanning of Super 8mm film?
  19. I'll have my black paintbrush at the ready to upgrade my FS5mk1 to a mk2! ;-) The mk1 already has the variable ND built in.
  20. Always a very risky when dealing with someone who has only made two posts to the forum and buying an extremely high value item. At least you have a physical phone number for him you can ring, does he really live in Kansas? At least he isn't overseas!! http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?171580-Does-anyone-know-the-whereabouts-of-Jason-Sinclair
  21. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1185424-REG/sony_pxw_fs5_xdcam_super_35.html Spotted the news when I was checking up on the HiSpeedCamera website: http://www.hispeedcams.com/sony-fs5-240fps-full-hd-camera-gets-750-price-drop/ Didn't realise a new FS5 had dropped to well under four grand. But I had already noticed the prices of a FS5 on eBay had been steadily trending down this year. So while the the FS700 had become more and more attractive (around US$1.5K ish is a common price on eBay for a FS700), if the FS5 comes down in price to only be another $1K more (as I'm sure the price drop on a new FS5 will apply pressure to eBay prices!) then it might be a tough ask to buy a FS700 when the FS5 is only a little more. Hmmmm..... But the Sony PMW-F3 on eBay for as low as possibly US$750ish itself for a whole camera (the FS5 price drop equals a whole F3!) remains attractive, especially as I wouldn't need to buy a new recorder at all for a 2nd F3 camera. (although in the last month or two the low end floor price of an F3 seems to have trended back up to $1K, I dunno... just a momentary blip I assume in the overall inevitable decline in prices for everything) Plus of course let's not forget the new BMPCC4K and the many other mirrorless cameras recently released.
