  1. Photos: D.D. Teoli Jr. It has a sandy texture / coating on the outside. If it was marketed to curb V.S....it does not work that well. What is the scoop?
  2. I recently picked up a Bolex EBM that a friend had had sitting in storage for a few decades. All the pieces seem to be together and carefully stored and kept (pictured below). The 2 cell batteries I have seem to go with the power grip. The issue is I don’t know which end is positive and which is negative and I’ve heard using the wrong end can blow the fuse. I’m wondering how to best test the camera’s electronics with the equipment I have? There is a charger and multiple power sources but I’m unsure of how to safely use and test any of it. As mentioned, the equipment has supposedly been well maintained and used very lightly. I’m unsure, however, if deterioration may have occurred with time and if I should invest in repairs and new parts. Anyone have any insights? Any help would be immensely appreciated
  3. Just arrived from B&H today. Project got cancelled so trying to get rid of these ;( $200/ea. Pickup in LA

  5. Hello! Wondering if anyone out there has a manual for a Moviola M-86 16mm Flatbed Editor? Or does anyone have any tips or know knowledgeable folks that may be willing to chat and share some advice re: maintenance & fine-tuning of these wonderful machines? Thanks! -Aaron Zeghers
  6. Hi, I've recently noticed a small blemish in the top left corner of the image when I use my Angenieux zoom lens (filming with my Arriflex 16mm camera). The blemish does not appear on the other lenses and has only very recently (on my last shoot in January) become apparent. Anybody know what it could be?
  7. I was going to try the database software at Open Office freeware. But it said I needed Java. Not knowing much about computers or even having faith in my ability to use Open Office, other than as a word processor, I gave up with the Java quest. Today it hit me, I can just make a master folder for my film Archive. I can make text files within the master folder. Each film gets a text file made for it. I can make a text template to paste in each text folder to standardize the info. Now I have an easy-to-use database that is alphabetized and searchable. And If I want to get fancy, I can make the folders suitable for JPEGs and put a few screen shots of each film in each folder. That was what a film collector did with his collection. He would take photos off the screen as he projected the films and put a handful of photos in each film entry. (Although he used fancy database software of some sort for the rest of the work.) It is very easy to get screen shots when you scan a film. You just hit export on the scanner software and boom...you get 5,000 or 10,000 or 30,000 JPEG or TIFF stills. (Of course, if you want them from a scanning company, you pay a few hundred $$ extra for that service.) I can also use my system for the VHS Archive as well. Nearly a thousand VHS, VHS-C and Betamax tapes to organize. Will I do it and get it all computerized in 1990's tech?? (Or is it 1980s?) Don't know. Right now, my goal is to put all the films in the Archive in alphabetical order, label the cans and then write them down in a hand-written log. After than...who knows? But at least I'm excited I have the option if I want it. Even though I write a lot here, I'm not much for typing into the 'puter when it comes to filling out forms. But it is nice being able to search films for content; especially with the home movies that cover a multitude of content areas. <><><><> 16mm GB (Gaumont-British) Reel Selection from Daniel D. 8. FOR SALE: ARRI SR2 SUPER-16 w/ Color Tap + Zeiss S16 Zoom Lens - FULL Camera Package Parting ways with my S16 Arri SR2. This camera has been incredible to own and I'm sure I'll regret selling it down the road but the time has come. The camera is in great working condition. I've never had a single problem with it. I'm selling it along with my Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 12-120mm S16 zoom lens. It's an incredible lens for 16mm. The 12-120 covers all your bases. It also has a macro function at 12mm that allows you to focus as close as you want. Along with that is everything else you need. You won't find a more complete package out there. See the list below. The camera, lens, mags, and batteries were all serviced in July of '19 by Du-All Camera in Brooklyn and have been lightly used since then. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have. 9. I know there are many Krasnogorsk haters on this forum but I wanted to share this awesome project by Russian DP Max Ivanov. It's been 2 years in the works and so much effort has been put into this with a ton of custom machined parts and boards. Here are the specs as shared on the Instagram page for the project: - Camera works with 7-12V batteries (it has a 2-pin lemo connector for power input) - Swiss 100 watt BLDC Motor. (BLDC motors have longer service life and were installed on the Aaton A Minima, XTR Prod, Arri 416.) - Motor controlled and stabilized by a microcontroller - Sync is accurate to 0.001fps at 25fps. (between 0.01-0.001 at other framerates) - Framerates: 1-50 fps - Video tap is based on GoPro internals which allows to record the tap feed in-camera. (Max said he will be adding a cable clamp / adapter since it uses the unreliable micro-hdmi connection from the gopro internals) - Optical viewfinder can be used at the same time as the video tap - Wi-Fi control which allows to set framerate and run/stop wirelessly via your phone - Electronic footage counter. (Maintains footage count after being powered off and has a reset button) - Super 16 gate with ground glass adjustment mechanism. FFD can now be easily tuned and will be precisely set on every model. Max will also be selling a set of tools for calibrating the FFD on this camera so you will be able to calibrate it yourself (I can already hear some of you complaining about how nobody should attempt to do this on their own unless they're a trained technician) - Super 16 viewfinder with correct markings - PL Mount Obviously not a camera for every situation, like narrative projects or basically anything with dialogue. However, I think it's perfect for more abstract projects like music videos or fashion films, especially when you need to move fast and do dynamic handheld stuff. I have one preordered and am super excited to test it out once it's ready! (I think the current eta is March/April)
  10. There seems to be a problem with my Schneider-Kreuznach 10mm lens for Arriflex ST. Whenever I've used it it's produced a cloudy/fogging image (see image) - this happens whether I use a matte box or not. I enquired with one lens servicing/repair company here in the UK and they suggested that the doublet elements might have separated, if this was indeed the case, they quoted £450 to fix it. If it was an issue with the coating, however, they said that couldn't be fixed by them. I should say that they were going by the pictures i sent and didn't have the lens itself to inspect. Anyway, what's your advice regarding this? £450 sounds a great deal of money to spend on the lens, especially considering you can buy another one for less than that. What should I do? Any suggestions? It would be a shame for the lens to simply not be used anymore.
  11. Hi everyone, I recently bought a Bolex Rex 4 and wanted to get it serviced and converted to a super 16. I've been trying to get a response from Bolex.com for months and sent numerous emails but with no success. I have also tried calling their number but instantly get cut off as if the phone number was not in use. The website says that their site is under construction but that they are still repairing and converting despite covid. Has anyone had any luck hearing from them lately?? Thanks!
  12. Hi there, I purchased a K3 in March 2021 from a highly rated seller on eBay and shot 5 reels since then. The camera came in great condition and the first 3 reels came back perfectly fine, no light leaks and no scratches. Most of the footage from the 4th reel came back shaky and split, (as you can see on the video below), however some of the last shots on that reel came out fine and stable. I thought it was a matter of me not loading the film properly or the pressure plate not sitting tightly in the camera. I shot the final reel a couple weeks ago and it came back with the same issue, but on the entirety of the footage this time. I am based in London and sent my K3 to a repair shop. They sent me a quote of 708£ (which exceeds my budget) for a full clean and repair, along with this message « The main faults that need repairs are the claw and transport system. Scratching and auto loading cannot be improved if occurs - common fault with this model » . Now I still have the loop formers on my K3 and having done some research, I found that some people had similar issues and that removing the loop formers could solve them. The camera was in perfect working condition and I take great care of it : I checked it before sending it for repairs and found no damage whatsoever. I know that the loop formers operate on a thread mechanism and therefore might not be very reliable. Then again, I'm new to this so looking for any advice! 14. I've asked around, read the manual, read online, called techs, and still can't get a straight answer on this one. I have an Eclair NPR with the Beala (Beauviala) crystal motor .. the manual states if the light goes on, sync is achieved and if the light is off, sync cannot be guaranteed. Elsewhere I see the exact opposite, and that the light is a warning that sync has been lost. I know this is because of the other motors that were made afterwards having different specs, but can anyone please tell me what the truth is on this one? Thank you!!
  15. Hello I just came across a Bolex h8 and was wondering if I could shoot 16mm with it? Assuming I put on the turret plate from a broken h16 Rex onto the h8 Rex, would I be good to shoot 16mm or would I have to do something with the sprockets, are the perforations different? Thanks!
  16. Hi everyone! I am looking to purchase a Bolex Rex 5 camera body. I am interested in cameras that are already in good working condition and not so much of a “fixer-upper”. If anyone has any leads that would be much appreciated! I am NYC based and am happy to pick up within the NY area.

  21. Hi, everyone! Gonna be shooting a film with a look rooted in Jazz photography from the likes of William Claxton, Dennis Stock and others known for the marvelous images they created around that beautiful genre. Obviously, the film's aesthetic's going to borrow a hell of a lot from these great photographers... However, what I'm most interested in is the B&W film stocks that were around the time in which the most iconic artists were photographed: the 1950s. So, on the one hand, what I'm wondering is if there's anyone in the room with an idea about the the rolls of B&W film available at that time and their characteristics. But on the other hand, I'd like to know if anyone knows where can I find information on the way these photograpers worked, which is to say the lenses and equipment they used, the way they developed their film and created they final shot in the darkroom, etc. Also welcome is information on the film stocks used to shoot movies or documentaries around the 50s. My guess is even at that time Double-X was the real deal, but... You know. A guess is a guess.
  22. Hi, I'm struggling to find a 400 foot magazine for the Arriflex 16m that will ship to Australia. It looks similar to the 16bl magazine but has slightly different drive gears. If you have one you'd be willing to sell and send overseas, let me know. (I'd also be interested in the 1200 foot mag if anyone has one) Thanks - Aren
  23. Hi all, Can't remember from where, but I've heard of the ability to shoot on print stock just as one would on regular motion picture stock, with the idea of having a very punchy and contrasty look. Does anyone have experience with this? Looking at the Kodak catalog, it seems print stock primarily comes in 2,000' rolls, which would make the process of downspooling a bit tedious...
