Hi everyone, I’m currently near the end of an arduous Arri BL3 repair. I found and installed replacement belts—finally—only to discover that the camera has an electrical gremlin. The camera ticks over for about one frame before winding down and stopping. The camera is running off of a wall powered, 12V 10A power supply, so it’s got plenty of juice. From what I understand, most DC motors function off of a “start” and “run” capacitor. This would lead me to believe that the camera is in need of a “run” capacitor to take it beyond an initial jolt of movement. Is this a misdiagnosis? Or if I’m correct has anyone dealt with this problem before and can point to the location of the electrical component in need of replacement? Thanks so much, I’ll follow up with a short clip of the issue.

I'm sure most of you have seen this beauty by now. Dropped out of nowhere yesterday and set the entire Internet ablaze. First of all, do yourselves a favor and avoid watching the trailer on YouTube or any other source than Netflix itself obviously. The trailer is apparently in 4K on the platform, I watched it on a big screen and it's obviously much less compressed and much more representative. The deaging can be seen from the opening of the trailer with Pesci and De Niro and at the end of it. Looks pretty darn impressive when viewed properly on Netflix. De Niro's skin looks a bit smooth on more compressed versions, it does not on Netflix itself. Otherwise, I've been checking out a bunch of set photos to determine how much was film and digital. The producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff pulled some numbers a while ago which were incorrect for some reason, ie 30% of the film being shot on 35mm, and that everything involving the deaging required shooting digitally. However, Thelma Schoonmaker said half of the film has them deaged. So that means half Alexa (as listed on IMDB) and half 35mm film. IMDB lists the following info: Arri Alexa Mini, Zeiss Master Prime and Cooke Panchro/i Classics Lenses Arricam LT, Zeiss Master Prime and Cooke Panchro/i Classics Lenses I don't know if anyone here knows Prieto or someone else involved with the film and can provide maybe more technical info? I also saw that Prieto tested some special rigs consisting of multiple cameras at a rental house. And you can see one of the rigs on the set photos, seemed like several Red cameras which are presumably there to capture facial data for the deaging. And the Alexa which is now being regularly used by Prieto and Scorsese for low light work (Wolf, Silence). Gorgeous work as expected and a film that's been in the works for a decade, Schoonmaker and others close to the project have said it's a different animal than Goodfellas and Casino despite the obvious initial similarities. The film is opening at NYFF late September too, presumably released in November on Netflix, Scorsese has been said to make a push for a wide release of sorts with possibly an exclusive theatrical window of a few weeks. -

I have for sale four Arri groundglasses. These are standard glasses, so from memory will fit a IIC or a 35III - but others might be able to put me straight on that. They're also great for many viewfinders, including the Kish UDF. 1. 'TV' (4:3) with mounting bracket. In excellent condition. 2. Another 4:3, no mounting bracket, some pencil marks where it has been marked up in a mystery ratio. Tiny mark bottom right, very clean otherwise. 3. 1:1.85, marked up to 16:9 (?) A chip on one side from bad handling, but it doesn't encroach into the picture area. Good for a viewfinder, or general use. No scratches/marks otherwise. 4. Probably a 4:3 but has been taped to 16:9 at some point. Apart from the tape residue (easily removed) it's in excellent condition too. Each one has a case - happy to sell separately or as a set, pickup or post. The going rate seems to be $150 (AUD) each, and $100 for the one with the mark. They're eyewateringly expensive new. But let's talk - I'm happy to negotiate for a package deal, or if these prices seem out of whack. Postage will be from Melbourne, Australia. Cheers, Jonathan. Not only is it sharp, has one of the most useful zoom ranges of any lens and has an amazing close-focus, but it also has almost NO FOCUS BREATHING at any focal length. Super-16 zooms are known for their bad focus breathing, and this lens has none at the wide end and almost none at the long end. With a field of view that is roughly equivalent to a 14.5-115mm in Super-35 terms and a close focus that nearly touches the front of the lens, this is the ultimate documentary lens. There is rarely a moment where you feel like you can't get the shot you need or feel like you have to change lenses. Perfect documentary shooting. This lens was designed to cover the Super 16mm format. If you are shooting on a camera with a super-35mm or APS-C sensor like a Canon C300 MKII, Sony FS7 or ARRI Amira, this lens will give you roughly the same field of view of as a 16-128mm lens would give you, which is really useful range. The 8-64mm gives you a field of view range that’s a bit wider and a bit longer than the popular Canon 17-120mm T2.95, and it’s lighter, cheaper, and almost a stop faster. The 8-64mm is a compact, lightweight, 8X cinema zoom lens, with a fast, constant T2.4 maximum aperture over the entire zoom range, with no ramping. This lens seems to have been developed with the documentary shooter in mind. It covers the most commonly used focal lengths, it’s got a fast maximum aperture, it’s extremely light-weight, and it has relatively short focus and zoom rotation, which is ideal for when you are zooming and pulling focus directly off the barrel. Hi everyone, thanks for looking through and the advice ahead of time. I have a shoot fast approaching and I'm debating the best way to light my exterior scene for an upcoming commercial. We will begin shooting early morning and we will see a family enter an amusement park from one angle where the sun is backlighting them - and then we will need to reverse the camera to see their POV. It will be a very sunny day I'm sure with no clouds so we should get some nice backlight. I'm debating however whether to front lit with a large ultra bounce (20x20 or 12x12) using the sun to light the family of 4 as they walk in (Wide - Full shot of family - then MID CU of each member). OR if I should also blast some M40s/M90's into the ultra bounce OR light them using 2 of these lights with diffusion frames or softboxes over them. The location has access to 63 amp power so we could run cables to take this power. I want a high key commercial look but want to go down the wisest route here. I have attached a sketch (actual location) in order to get a better idea.... I also plan to use a Job at the back of the family at the end of the street for an establishing shot... Also after I get this I will have to move the camera around facing a street of performers so they will all be front lit by the sun. I could film this first in order to get a more pleasant look with the sun being lower (Maybe use the Frames with Diffusion in case of any camera shadow if need be) and then film the family. Reference Picture attached... Any thoughts you may have on this or experience with similar setups would be super. Cheers all!
