The Hobbit shooting on RED EPIC - big news?

Recommended Posts

[However subconsciously, the decision to shoot football at 120 fps is an attempt to convert a film camera into a high speed video camera and currently we have the technology to display footage at 120 frames per second.

No it's not. 120fps is used to create slow motion. There is no other motive, conscious or unconscious. If you must post such ridiculous nonsense, i suggest you head over to REDUSER. They like that sort of thing over there.

I have been shooting action sports films with high frame rates my entire career and none of this makes any sense to me. Ive also worked with a few NFL Filmers and haven't heard of this. I use higher frame rates (25-500fps) for many reasons: maybe to create a feeling or to show off something happening really fast. When I hand hold s shot from a heli I will sometimes throw the frame rate up to smooth out the shot from vibration. But maybe im not understanding how slow motion makes film look like video.

Also I just want to say I think this thread has gone cookooo. Me included... I came on wanting to know what the hate for RED was all about and got my answer quickly. The back and forth digi vs film, RED fanboy vs. film diehards is crazy. Good stuff guys. I like it.

Very little of what Thomas James posts makes sense to anybody

Max, you missed the whole point. The funny part was not how Jim's offer to up the bet would matter to Jim's wallet, but rather, how it caused Stephen to stop taunting me at Reduser about upping the wager. In Vegas terms, I guess you could say Jim called his bluff.

So Max, let me ask you: Do you believe that the majority of +$35 mil films in production as of Dec 31 will be shooting digital or film? Like I've said, I will probably lose this due to the delay in Epic's release, but it might be close.

Holy Crist man, just pay up. Yes, digi will beat out film at some future date, just not quite now.

Really, all the hemming and hawing is painful to watch. An internet bet is a fun idea, but to see someone actually not be willing to pay and search for a stupid out just illustrates why such things rarely workout well.

I'd much rather watch your outtake footage of innately noble wild horses than watch what's on display here.

Lol WTF. I give up.

Okay Max and Stephen and whomever, PM me your paypal address and the money is on the way. Maybe then the peanut galley will quiet down and we can investigate who actually won the bet. ;)

I thought it was only 1 million, but, whatever.

We'll never know now, because the original thread http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=17888 has mysteriously been replaced by a boring thread about the 47 millionth music video shot on RED :D

That is one of the more annoying quirks of Reduser - if anything gets deleted, all the other "serial numbers" get changed to fill in the gap. So if anybody provides a link to a particular Reduser post, and one of the earlier posts in the thread gets deleted for some reason, the link becomes nonsensical.

You and Max have both been paid now via Paypal, though no evidence of any kind has been shown here to indicate I even lost. I just don't want my reputation trashed online over some stupid nonsense. This was just supposed to be something fun, not mean spirited.

I've had some good times here, and met some good people, but I am going bid you all a fond farewell. It's been fun. No hard feelings. Best of luck to all. You can find me at Reduser and Timescapes any time. :)

Tom if you think you are having a tough time dealing with the ego-bruising now, wait till you deal with the indie film distribution world! (Or try working on a narrative film set as producer or director.)

This, as well as the red marketing/preaching, is all going to look pretty petty and distant someday soon.

Anybody wanna make a small wager on when that happens

You could always make your own. I have an inexpensive Deep Fryer set up in my garage, filled with a mixture of Sunflower Oil and Beef Dripping. If I want chips, all I have to do is switch it on, then while it's heating up, go and peel and slice one or two fresh potatoes. They only take 7-8 minutes to cook, and where are you going to get better chips than that?

Fortunately I live near an upmarket seafood store, so I can get good fish too.

Up in the state of Queensland (north of here) they must have some sort of strict labelling regulations regarding the source of seafood. Once I went to this little beachside cafe for some fish and chips. You could order any type of fish they had in their counter display to go with your chips, but the only type of fish that was labelled "Product of Australia" was so-called "Flake" which is a local euphemism for shark!

Everything else was imported. Barramundi is a highly esteemed freshwater fish native to Australia, but all the Barramundi they had was "Farmed in Taiwan"!

The stupid thing was, the week before, I'd been out fishing in the same bay and caught quite a few good-sized bream and flathead.

We catch an enormous amount of high quality fish around Australia, but most of it gets exported and substituted with frozen imported crap. At least with our high dollar at the moment, local fish is pretty affordable.

As for mushy peas, I can't remember the last time I had any of those form a fast food joint that were even vaguely edible. But as with the chips, at least I can buy the dried peas in my local supermarket and make my own.

Do you live near the Sydney fish market in Pyrmont? Good place.

Wow, this has gone through and through, I'm sure it's agreeable these digital developments are the progression towards a digital dominated market, I suppose in the same way as still photography. As far 3D goes, aren't all the newly developed rigs far more suitable for digital rather than film, wouldn't there be more complications with convergence and the alignment of the cameras thus the whole reasoning for digital recording being such an important part in the 'new' 3D process?

Oh hell, THAT Tom Lowe? Aargh, which dimwit scared him off? He's an expert timelapse photographer whose presence we sorely need.

No, I live out North-West of Sydney closer to Windsor. But it's not that hard to get to Pyrmont and I do shop there for special occasions. There's a big De Costi's at Rouse Hill which has a very good range of fresh local seafood and I usually go here for day-to-day stuff. They also stock a lot of the more unusual stuff that most of us would never have heard of just a few years ago.

That's one of the great things about Sydney: Because of the enormous ethnic diversity here, you can get just about any foodstuff if you know where to look for it, and most of the customers are not used to paying high prices for food, so it's usually cheap by the standards of most countries.

At the moment the Pacific Peso is actually almost at parity with the greenback, which means local distributors can bid on a more even footing with overseas buyers, which in turn means we can buy local produce at prices not seen for several years.

Doesn't do a lot for our local film industry unfortunately. Last I heard, Arri are moving into the same building that currently houses Deluxe Australia (formerly Atlab) and Panavision. Meanwhile, Panavision Australia are being forced to sell off their Panalux Lighting division.

I've got to say, (assuming you're Sydney based) you've picked a pretty awful time to want to get into the local Film industry.

But on the positive side, if you're interested in food, there doesn't seem to be any shortage of cooking or similar gastro-porn productions. All you need is a nice looking kitchen, a camera, some food and a few lights. Being able to cook would be nice, but doesn't appear to be an essential pre-requisite, not from what I've seen anyway....

It's not hard to see why that particular format is so popular.

In all seriousness, what has Tom Lowe actually done?

There is a "Tom Lowe" on IMDB, but is that the same person?

"A Decorated Gulf War veteran"?

I'd check out his web site, his time lapse landscapes sequences explain where he's coming from.

That's the first thing I did.

It doesn't really tell you anything.

That's why I asked.

Or to put it a tad more bluntly, why is he regarded as such a tragic loss to this forum?
