Daniel Meier
Thought this thread could use a little resurrection. So I'll go ahead and post a new first shot of a movie I've recently been blown away by. Edited April 27, 2017 by Daniel Meier
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted April 27, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted April 27, 2017 That one with the flock and girl is from "The Duelists".
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted April 27, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted April 27, 2017 The shot of the trees reminds me of the opening to "Prisoners" but I don't remember snow in that scene.
Daniel Meier
That's correct David. It's "Prisoners". Now it's your turn to post a frame.
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted April 28, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted April 28, 2017 Opening shot from this 70's movie: If that's too obscure, I will post the first shot from the first interior scene.
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted April 28, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted April 28, 2017 Here's another opening shot: Again, I can post the second shot for another clue.
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted April 28, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted April 28, 2017 Another opening shot: I'm discovering just how often the opening shot in an older movie is a duped optical...
Mark Dunn
Here's another opening shot: Again, I can post the second shot for another clue. If it's not "My Darling Clementine" we're going to need it. Edited April 28, 2017 by Mark Dunn
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted April 28, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted April 28, 2017 Correct! Here was the second (better) shot: It's interesting because the first shot of cattle is sort of a B-roll image with a bad, short pan, followed by a great wide shot with nice clouds. Back then, you sometimes saw these longer lensed shots with rough pans in them, like some sort of friction head was being used.
Premium Member Satsuki Murashige Posted April 28, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted April 28, 2017 Here's another opening shot: Again, I can post the second shot for another clue. 'My Darling Clementine' (1946) *Edit: Dagnabit, Mark beat me to it!
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted April 28, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted April 28, 2017 Since there are no takers on the other two, here are the additional clues: First interior scene from my first picture: Second scene from my second picture:
Gregg MacPherson
This later frame may help. you cheater 2.JPG Hint: - The characters and their props and the camera are all moving left in the frames I offered. - Was put up for Best Foreign Film Oscar but didn't make the nomination. - Not all the characters are human. BTW the first frame I offered from this shot is on page 6. Don't know if Igor is still around... Anyway, this was a trick question...I didn't think anyone would use or expect the same film twice. So yes, The Turin Horse, again. It's quite a long shot, a full magazine felt like, a lot of time for the camera to explore the explicit detail but also quite abstracted shapes and textures. Sorry Igor.....
Premium Member Satsuki Murashige Posted April 29, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted April 29, 2017 Is #1 'Fat City'?
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted April 29, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted April 29, 2017 Yes! Any guess on the other movie? It's from the 1970's, had an all-star cast, and was nominated for an Oscar for its cinematography.

Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted April 29, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted April 29, 2017 The shot of the freeway under construction is from "Fat City". Yes, Miguel, that is from "Legend". Any guess on the interior shot of the sofa? In some ways, the shot is a clue as to the title. Close, George, but "Hidden Fortress" was a scope movie.
