  1. I have recently learnt that my objections to the whole concept of AF in professional camera work ,is now actually out dated ..and that there is very good hybrid AF in some professional camera,s now .. Sony Fx9 and the Canon C300/500 latest models .. I think within a few years it will be introduced into flag ship, high end cameras . of course still need a FP .. AF cant make decisions, but for alot of shots its going to work.. and speed things up..
  2. Not bothered about the down arrow .. I will be a rock when those running dogs are nothing but cosmic dust ..!
  3. Well thats exactly the argument they would give the other way round .. they are the being kept out , not eligible to win awards .. the favored group in our industry is overwhelmingly white ,middle class males .. and always has been.. of which Im one too, and its served me very well being one in this business.. Im not saying I totally agree with this forced quote ..I mean what if the film is 90% black cast but every single character is a drug addled sociopath eating white babies .. but I can see the argument of it being the only way to change things .. how else is it going to happen .. ? Oh hang on are you saying the same thing ?
  4. It wasn't me sir .. but I guess the argument is .. the bias has to go the opposite way by enforcement .. to get anything to actually change .. it is of course a double edge sword .. but seen by many as just something that has to be done to get any sort of change happening .. the Oscars is definitely way behind the times .. I means its absolutely mind numbing that Katherine Bigelow is the first women to win best director Oscar in 2010 !!!! what the flying fcuk !! .. its going to have to be forced ,that much is obvious ..
  5. This film is taking a bit of a pounding .. maybe any publicity is good ,or not ? .. maybe there was more than one reason for the delayed release .. so it seems you do actually have to hear what the actors are saying , unless you are Brando and haven't learnt the lines ..
  6. And whats great is .. they all have the same self doubt and nerves as the rest of use.. the one with Hoytema saying he had sleepless nights before Dunkirk.. Sandgren the same .. and the great man himself ..
  7. If you ever get pushed into burning in REC709 again in Sony world .. I recommend the new Sony REC 709 color .. S Cinetone .. I eventually got to shoot a job on S Cinetone with my Fx9... its really very nice .. a world away from the old Sony look.. alot more head room .. and nice roll off in the highlights .. nothing like Slog3 of course .. but really a massive improvement..
  8. Sound recordists wallet was used as counter weight for all crane shots .. "Tokyo Dogs".. wow thats going back and was shot on film !!
  9. I think the art is ,standing up for yourself, and eating is pretty fundamental , without being the angry guy .. and so its best to bring up any grievances early , in a non confrontational way..state the facts.. rather then let it all fester and then blowing your top .. don't want to sound like Yoda .. but I was often the hot head back in the day.. never ends well .. just say what you have here, to the relevant person in production.. but also don't be a door matt either.. some productions will just be dicks and people have died as a result.. and Ive never worked on anything worth dying for yet .. ?
  10. Well my comments were regarding the light mentioned by the OP .. he wasn't ever talking about big units for daylight ext .. but yes bi color lights do save time .. sort of obvious .... especially if they are all rigged up high and you can adjust by remote .. battery power can be very useful.. also for pretty obvious reasons .. small spaces hard to rig power .. locations with without power ! .. and just for ease .. you can pick up a light on. stand and just move it .. and its alot faster .. maybe when you do more lighting, you will learn how convenient they are before dismissing them .... you can own batteries for sure ,they will last about 3 or 4 years .. put them on the invoice make your many back 100 times ..or rent them with the lights, its really not a big deal.. no one is worrying about the re sale price .. you don't sell them !..
  11. I think the simple answer is yes.. 180 degree shutter was a necessity of film cameras to move the film through the gate . 24fps. . this "look" created by that level of motion blur became the accepted "look " of movies .. TV electronic camera were interlaced, so a whole different look completely .. so the holy grail for digital camera became getting as close to the film look as possible.. which they could when progressive scan took over from interlaced .. if I shoot slo mo I try to make the shutter 180.. or close enough or depending on flicker concerns.. also good for ramping .. going from normal speed to slo mo .. used to be very popular !.. A good example is the disaster that was the 48fps Hobit version.. to the masses it looked like cheap day time tv.. as thats what everyone associated that motion blur look , or lack there of .. and the opposite was the year they shot the live MTV awards in 24fps.. alot of calls to the tv station by people claiming its wasn't a live broadcast .. because it didn't look all the live TV they had seen before .. it may die out in time as accepted norms change .. alot of young people playing video games at much higher frame rates and they might not care about the film look in 20 years time ..
  12. These are very old model lights now .. I had one years ago and it quite hard to sell second hand .. great light and a good price, the problem might be how long they continue making the bulbs .. there newer models are all LED.. plus you have to change the bulbs to change the color temperature .. TBH I wouldn't buy into this old technology, especially as I doubt they even make the bulbs anymore .. hence the price drop .. go LED, Bi color .. that can be battery operated if needed..
  13. Oh shame , you could mentioned my name .. we have a few good stories .. he married my then girlfriends sister .. went all over the world together for about 7 years .. and worked with the beloved Ken ..
  14. Yours truly, back in the day, with a young Barry Ackroyd BSC in the Sahara desert .. sometime in the 80,s !!
  15. haha ! .. no really we used this DoF calculators .. it was the standard bit of gear .. that and this fancy leather tape measures .. with the brass winder .. I still have mine .. ! you could write on the leather with your china pencil.. and the little colored tape triangles on the white plastic removable discs.. heady days indeed ! ..
  16. We used to use these in the UK in the 80,s .. had to look it up.. quite nostalgic to seen again .. I remember on very easy shots .. whipping this out and looking all intense as if I was doing something really difficult before the shot .. trying to impress makeup mostly .. .. never worked of course ..
  17. so Digital can look ok then.. ? .. and according to Tyler, the focus puller had an easy job too.. whats not to love ..did you hear Fraser,s pod cast with Team Deakins .. quite interesting ..
  18. Good point sir .. and I agree totally .. but they are complete characters , not just the accent ,.. and how they got away with them god only knows .. the most obvious one ,in my mind being the Jar Jar Bings character .. cringing to even watch .. basically Star Wars went to shite in a basket after the Empire Strikes Back.. Ewoks was the beginning of the end .. when you know you can make more money from Merchandise than the film.. the Mustafa Wong baddie is still with us..
  19. The weird accent to used for pretty funny for anyone from the UK.. just couldn't take it seriously .. he's done other "normal " English accents ,but this one was really odd.. ?
