Hello everyone, very soon I am going to tackle my first well budgeted movie as a camera op and I was looking for some tips from professionals on the matter. Its not the first time I operate but I am accustomed to small projects with little complications. This time I will be working with an experienced director who is going to rely on me a lot and with new gadgets for me such as the dolly magnum etc. We are a 2 cameras unit and although we run the same sensor I am stuck with the heavier camera. I expect some handheld action as well so any tips with that would be very much appreciated as well. Thank you all in advance!

I want to buy a 12v new battery suitable for a Bolex EBM. There's nothing on ebay and in Super8filmaholic website is out of stock. I have one old Bolex battery but I am looking for an alternative with more capacity. Best, Marcos

Hey, so i recently got this Sankyo super8 camera for $5... It's missing a button on top just ahead of a rocker switch and I don't think the rocker does anything anymore. I believe the model is CME666. If anyone could tell me if it will still shoot I would greatly appreciate it! The motor does work and everything else on it works too.

Hello everyone, I am a 3rd year film student studying Cinematography. The dream is to one day be a DOP for Film and Documentary, however, first I want to work my way up through the ranks of the camera department. I have undergone a number of weeks of work experience as a shadow camera trainee on 2 British TV shows. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to get work as a camera trainee in the UK? Or perhaps can offer me any work/work experience over summer as a trainee? Cheers! Josh Montoro

I am selling a brand new Allsteady-7 3 axis gimbal (from TurboAce). It was bought last year, has only been tested 2 times (works flawlessly). I am selling it because for the past year i have devoted my time to photography, thus no longer being in need of some tools that just lye around the house. for details on what it does exactly (it is basically a heavy duty gimbal): http://www.turboace.com/allsteady7.aspx it comes with 2 batteries, charger, monitor arm and balance stand. The item is located in Bucharest, Romania. So i would prefer to sell it in Europe (i guess it would be more convenient for the buyer too). price is 3600$ + transport fees (keep in mind it is new).

Apparently these are being called the "T-Series"? Panavision has pictures of two on their Twitter and Instagram. There's a 150mm T3 and a 37-85mm T2.8 zoom (front element like the two newer ones from 2007). Anyone heard anything else about these? Other lengths and so on?

I know essentially nothing about cinematography or film making - I'm just making a youtube series to satisfy my overblown ego and placate my own sense of inadequacy expand on my satirical blog. I'm running on a shoestring budget, I have next to no experience, and I have no equipment. So what kind of camera, microphone, and software could I get for very little money that would still allow me to make tolerable-quality little videos? Thanks!

Hello! I've just started putting together a youtube channel with little behind the scenes videos, tutorials and advice for the aspiring, young, or otherwise "new" cinematographer. I've had many colleagues and students express frustration at the daunting task of "learning how to light". While complex in many regards, it also merely requires you to begin by putting one foot in front of the other... Take a look and let me know if you find this video helpful! Alright, where to start... I'm a young aspiring filmmaker whose had a passion for making films ever since I was 6. Self-taught, I've made films all on the digital format, and recently, I've been shooting short films on the Canon Rebel T2i. I'm all for manual control, and I'm a pretty big hater of auto focus. Being that most of the filmmakers that inspire me shoot on film, and that it's (sadly enough) slowly dying, I've decided I want to move from digital to film. Now I understand that a great place to begin is with film photography. I've signed up for a photography class (showing you how to shoot and develop film) for my Junior year, and I've also been reading through the web and these forums to understand the film process. My first set of questions are: What still film camera should I begin with? What type of film should I use? Anyway to make a cheap DIY dark room setup? After some practice with that, I wish to begin filming short films (after some more tests of course) on a motion picture film camera. I have in mind using a Super 16mm camera, however that may not be the right choice depending on your responses. So here is my big set of questions for you guys: Which Super 16mm (if I should even use a Super 16mm) should I shoot with? Which film stock should I shoot on? What are the differences between types of film stock? I understand that there's the 'Ultra' modification to convert 4:3 to 16:9, is there any other way to do this (2x anamorphic lenses)? Or could the gate be easily modified on my own? Should I use light meters? If so, which ones do you recommend? What's the best and affordable way of a HD DIY telecine? I understand you can send in your film to get it processed and telecined, but which one is the most reliable and affordable? How to properly light an indoor scene? How to shoot at night (EXT and INT)? Recommended books or websites? __________________________________________________________________________________ As for my tastes and interests (as it could help you answer my questions more specifically): I love Hitchcock, Welles, Nolan, and Kubrick. Film noir has always intrigued me, and I love the look of it. I guess you can say I love low-light photography and cinematography. A modern DP that I dearly love is Wally Pfister, and I understand he shoots on film. If I asked him these questions, what would he say? I also understand Chris Nolan shot Following with an Arriflex BL 16mm (don't know which model). I love the community here, and I hope you guys can understand my switch to film as I think its the true magic of cinema. Thanks ahead of time for checking this post out and taking the time to respond to newbies like myself. I hope to deliver my style and form of storytelling with film. Thanks so much guys! *do note that I own a Bell and Howell MS 30 Super 8mm (no stock)*

I'm a sophemore studying film, the film department at my school is pretty weak so I went out and bought a blackmagic cinema camera and decided to just teach myself Cinematography. I've had the Camera for about a month. The only camera I've had before this one was a gopro hero3 so I had a lot to learn about lenses, color grading, focusing, and a lot of other stuff before I was ready to try to put any stories together. I shot this one mainly focusing on the cinematography since story telling is not my main point yet. Plz tell me how I can improve.

Ok, somebody needs talk to me about this. An open source 4k cinema camera. I believe they'll be releasing the plans this summer, and perhaps selling prototypes. http://axiom.apertus.org/index.php?site=alpha I've been wondering when the open source hardware movement would find its way to the camera world. I'd be amazed if this project didn't flop (the beta version they want to sell via kickstarter seems more like an interesting paperweight than a working camera), but man, I would love to beta test. Perhaps someone else will pick up where this group leaves off. So. The topic is, will you someday be building your production camera out of off the shelf parts, like a PC? My position: it will be possible, but it'll be more of a hobbyist pursuit, and the heir to Epic, Alexa, etc will have features the home builders still can't touch. Perhaps there will be a few models developed (like Redhat Linux) that are more widely adopted in professional applications. The first professional cinematographers had to build their own cameras, y'know...

I need some advice to help me decide on a Camera, and I'll give a quick run-down of my situation because I've seen others leave out details on the forum after a brief scan. I'm a Graphic Design student in Toronto, I'm in my 4rth year doing my Design Thesis, and over the past 2 years I've taken more motion graphics/VFX classes than anything else (which is strange to me in a design program mostly based on print and typography) none the less I've found myself heading in the direction of film. I've been doing photography for some time now, I mostly only shoot for personal, but it lead me into film making when I had my Nikon D3100 (by no means a great camera for video) I mostly shoot action sports up until now, some of the atheltes are taking on professional sponsorships for this year, so with that in mind I already needed to upgrade my gear to keep up with the level of deliverables. As of recently I had my camera gear all stolen from me, there is little to no chance I will ever see any of it again. My next intention is to pick up more professional level video camera, something between $2000 and $3500 (Canaidan dollars) and I have NO idea what to pick. Most skate/snowboard/action sport camera men I meet suggest Sony VX series cameras, which to me isn't so appealing, I don't want to be investing an already limited amount of money into something used. I have some minor technical idea of what I'm looking at from playing with my gopro and knowing DSLR technology pretty firmly, but digital camcorders still confuse me when I read the technical specifications, there's just a lot to take in. Beyond action, I do plan to step out into film making, and even hope to try my foot in areas I've studied like advertising. I've been mostly going off what's available to me from Henrys http://www.henrys.com/Categories/112-Pro-Video-Cameras.aspx So my question for those of you already experianced in this, what am I looking for? Anything right now is positive for me.
