  1. I was going to put this in the Off Topic section, since it is historical in nature. But looks like that section is shut down as I can't access or view it any longer. So, this section looks like the most apropos section to put it in. This may have some interest for the cinematographer that is trying to recreate an old look for titles/ intertitles for a project. Back in the day, magazines dedicated to the home movie market, would have a page or two of premade titles in each issue for them to use in their movies. The person would set up a copy stand with close up lens diopter and shoot the premade titles / intertitles for their film. Sometimes the titles would be generic. Other times they would be for a suggested project. These are from 1940. I've got about 2 feet of 'Home Movies,' 'Cine' Photographer' & 'Movie Maker' magazines from the 1930's-1940's to scan. I will eventually upload them to the Internet Archive. Lots of interesting film history in them. <><><><> Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection Daniel D. 3. I am selling a "like new" Lomo UPB-1A developing tank for super 8mm/16mm/35mm. The tank comes with a longer hose and an extended spindle for the spirals. The tank is in like new condition and works as it should, all spirals are in tact and in excellent condition. I am based in the US, and am asking $240 for the tank. The benefit with buying from me is you don't have to wait long for the tank to ship overseas. If youd like to see photos, please DM me with your email address and I could send them. I am only accepting PayPal. If interested, send me a message. Best, Derick
  4. Hey everyone, I have recently started to venture into 16mm film and bought an Arri SR2 paired with a set of Zeiss Super Speed MKI (9.5, 12 and 16) After testing a few stock options I shot a music video and just received the scans back. Both the test shoot and the final images from the music video consistently exhibit similar focusing issues - always focused a little too short (about 30cm to be exact). Could the camera / ground glass be behind this issue? Could the lenses be behind this issues? I noticed the 9.5mm and the 12mm to mostly correlate with the soft shots. I do however understand that I am mostly likely the be the culprit, but the consistency of this issue really surprised me. The ground glass is relatively clean and bright, and seemed tack sharp every single time. I did take the time to make sure each shot were properly focused, but despite many precautions, many shots came back soft, even while having the camera on sticks. I plan on having the camera and the lenses serviced but thought I would ask more seasoned ACs for advice. Cheers! Val
  5. Hello there ! I am wondering about the scan part of the production for upcoming tests on an eclair gv16. Am i suppose to ask to the lab to make the Scan or TC at regular 25fps recommendation or am i missing something ? I understand that it is good to match the frame rate to the scan/TC 'rate' for 25 fps and under, but for the rest, i don't have an idea. thanks in advance Jordan
  6. Hi everyone, My film has been postponed due to the Covid situation and I am therefore interested in selling my 16mm film. I have approximately 35 rolls of Orwo N75 400ft/122m core. They are all from the same batch and from the end of 2020. The have been refrigerated since I bought them. Unit price is 140$ + the shipping (from Copenhagen, Denmark) Here is some stuff I shot last year with the same stock ( slightly graded) : https://vimeo.com/490263331/42f7a3d17e Thank you and a great day to you all. 9. Bought eight 400ft rolls of 16mm double-x about nine months ago directly from Kodak for a shoot that was cancelled due to covid. It's been in a refrigerator since then, so should be just about as good as new. Prefer to sell it all, but happy to sell in parts as well. Located in LA, so local pickup/drop-off preferred but can ship if paid for. Looking for 130/roll, but open to offers.
  10. Hi, I've recently acquired an Aaton LTR 7 and was wondering if it was possible to fit a variable shutter in the LTR to allow flicker free filming at 24fps in 50hz countries? I know some lights will be fine, my concern is practical lights which will pulse with a 180˚ shutter at 24fps. Thanks, Jacob
  11. Hi Group, I've just joined. I recently bought an Arri S 16mm on ebay. The camera has come from Italy and used to belong to RAI in Rome (Italian Public Broadcasting), which may explain some of the quirks; I live in the UK by the way. My intention is to use it to make a short 16mm film later in the year. Before that though, I need to get it working and to run a test film through it. Hopefully you'll be able to help me. I have included photos of all the issues raised below. I've attached all relevant photos. The camera came with two battery packs that don't work - the elements need changing. My question is: What is the best and most cost-effective (not mutually exclusive, surely) way of getting it running now? Should I just replace the elements in the packs and use all the existing accessories as they are? Or is there a better way of doing it these days. (For instance, the batteries in the packs are soldered with the wires and I would need to take it to a professional to do this.) The Italian charger seems to work, the lights come on anyway, and I've bought a Uk adapter for its plug. The Italian/Uk thing maybe complicates things unnecessarily? The camera has an Arri 12 volt addition to its side (see pic). What should go into its socket? I don't have the cable for it anyway. It also has a fixed-rate motor attached, although it has also come with the variable motor. Any advice you can offer would be appreciated, I'm itching to run a roll of film through it. Thanks in advance. Iolo Edwards
  12. Hi I’m looking into buying a filmo 70Dr I wanted to know if people can share had scans of the camera. i want to see how good of quality this camera can reach
  13. Hello, I would like to hear some advice, tips.. About 16mm film Vision 3 and it's grain. I recently shot a roll of 100 feet of Vision 3 250D and it turned out great for a Krasnogorsk K3 that I bought for $70 on ebay. I noticed grain specially in the shadows even when I was exposing for middle gray or 18% gray and I had enough light. Nothing wrong with grain. I understand is part of the texture of film and I like it. What I don't like is that after color grading the video (2k, ProRes 444) The grain was moving a lot and it was more like RGB grain than the organic look of film grain. Here is the story: I got to the place where I shot this when the sun was setting. I prepared for shooting and by that time the sun was behind a mountain and I didn't have any specular light. But being Vision 3 250D I was still getting good numbers in the meter. (Sekonic 558). ASA: 250 Frame Speed: 24 Shutter Angle: 150 Apertures: f11 at the beginning, f8 15minutes later, f5.6, etc. I mean there was enough light to expose the film properly. The meter was not suggesting apertures like f1.4 or f1, but I still can notice this grainy areas. Is this normal? Was it because of the time of the day or light conditions? What would you do in that situation? Over expose and then pull in processing? Is it a post production problem? Also do you sharp the image when downscaling from 2k to 1080? I know it's supposed to be almost the same but the image was much larger than the 1080 frame. I can live with that, but I would like to learn more and hopefully get even better results when shooting film. It was my first time with 16mm by the way. Thanks you guys for sharing info and advice. You Tube: http://youtu.be/SKxsLj_p1Jk Dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/cs9ipoxxervacqp/K3%20Wide.mp4?dl=0 You Tube softens the image to a point where grain is almost imperceptible so I'm including a file that you can download if you wanna take a look closer.
  14. Hi all, I have recently bought a Bolex H16 EBM. I have charged the battery for 15 hours and when I place it on the camera the red warning sign turns on and stays on (motor not working) I have searched it up and I know these old batteries (12V) can be defected. I tried again this evening and placed it on the camera, but then the light started to flicker and turned off and stayed off. The motor was not running at that time either. I’m scared the electronics inside the camera is defected? If so what can I do to make the motor work? I also know that the batteries to the camera may giving too less power, and that’s the reason why the motor won’t run. Would appreciate any help on this, since I’m all new to this camera.

  16. I’m shooting with V3 500T 7219 this weekend and I haven’t been able to find a good source of information regarding using LED fixtures (Lite Mat Plus 1 S2, Hive Wasp-100C, Quasar Q-LED) on film. According to the Kodak via the Vision 3 brochure it states “If the kind of lamp is unknown, a KODAK WRATTEN2 Color Compensating Filter CC30R + CC20Y can be used with an exposure index (EI) of 250. Light Source Exposure Index “ which seems like a safer bet, however I was going to mix in a few Tungsten fixtures for hard light. Has anyone worked with these LED lamps and V3 500T? Or any thoughts on how to rate them? Most of the lamps will be colored to 3200K but a couple will be 5600K. Ideally the LED fixtures would be helpful to make small soft sources. Unfortunately, I don’t have time to test this week before hand, so any advice would be appreciated. Also this will be 24fps only. I’m aware that the CRI is an important factor in this. Also I’m assuming color temp is going to effect my rating. I’m going to reach out to a couple manufactures and see what they recommend as well. Thanks

  19. Hey guys, I'm looking to buy some original Kodak A-wind film for my A Minima. Alternatively I would also buy the plastic spools which came with the film, I'd need 4 of them.
  20. Hi, I'm currently in pre-production on a "kitchen-sink" social realism drama and I'm looking at films like 'Fish Tank' and 'This is England' as visual references for the look of this film. I want to use the flat and dry colour palettes used in these films to create a similar mood and atmosphere for my film. Eventhough my influences are from an 80's style, this is a creative choice for a film with a contemporary story. I will be testing the Sony F55 and the Blackmagic distagon lenses next week to see if this would be a possible substitute for shooting 16mm film as this would be too expensive. I've been told that this would change my depth of field and that I'll be shooting with a 2x crop. The majority of this short film will be shot ecu - mids with occasional wides as it's quite a close and intimate story. I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or advice in regards to my approach? Here are a few visual references. 21. I was featured on Kodak's Instagram feed today which was cool. I came up with a new use for an old fish tank. https://www.instagram.com/p/BKD3ihkBD6k/?taken-by=kodak_shootfilm&hl=en
  22. Hey everybody, On another thread awhile ago I saw somebody looking for advice on how to achieve that "Kodachrome look" when there aren't many reversal options left. There was a great suggestion to try making a print of the negative, and transferring THAT. Has anybody done this, and does anybody have any links to the results? 20 years ago in film school, I remember getting a 16mm work print transferred to VHS (!) and I remember it looked cool, but that was a long time ago and I don't still have it. I would love to see iif this is worth doing, or if it's too much hassle / expense for something that could maybe be achieved just as well or better in a standard telecine with the right colorist, etc. I'm shooting a Super-16 film later this month and I, too, would love that heavily saturated reversal "look". Thanks so much for any advice, Bo Price
