  1. I've recently started shooting on 35mm and I have been extremely frustrated by the exorbitant quotes and turnaround times I am getting from post houses around the L.A area for scanning my films. Coming off RED Dragon..once I saw my first scanned 35mm test roll (also had a print made which I viewed on one of my moviolas) I knew I was never going back to digital. Film was everything I always wanted. I am toying with the idea of finding 5-10 independent filmmakers, in the L.A area who are shooting on 16mm and 35mm to come together and invest in a high quality, fast, high resolution scanner (Lasergraphics comes to mind) for us to use 24/7 at no additional costs (except for initial investment). The lasergraphics is a fast scanner (up to 30fps @5k) so we could crunch a lot of footage - fast! When the scanner is not being used by the investors, we could scan for other independent filmmakers, effectively paying ourselves back. There are obviously things to iron out like: -Where is the scanner stored? -Do we operate with a queue system(when investor 1 is done, investor 2 scans..etc) -Who operates the scanner? -Is there a quota limit per week? (If investor 1 has 20,000' of film but investors 2,3,4,5 have 1000' we make logical arrangements so everyone can have their footage scanned. After the one time investment, investors get unlimited access to the scanner for life. Investors sign a fair agreement so investors are protected against overuse, etc. That's it - I had this idea because of the frustration I've been going through lately. If anybody is interested or wants to pitch in other ideas, post here or PM me directly. I have a scanner option but need to discuss with potential investors.

  7. Is there on the market some sort of film dispenser, allowing us to keep large spools of 2000' film stock, and transfer lengths of 100 ft on a smaller spool for shooting? Occasionally I see good deals on larger film cans but my camera only use 100 ft spools so I was wondering if there's a way I could buy these large reels, and conveniently transfer on 100ft spools. sv

  10. Hi Everyone, I have a quick question in regards to shooting 16mm as I have pretty much no experience doing it, though it's something I wouldn't mind trying even if it cost some $$$. I picked up an old Keystone A-12 at an estate sale for $20 and was having trouble finding any information on it. Specifically, was wondering if it took single or double perf film. From my eyes it looks to be single perf, as I can only see sprockets on one side of the guide reel, but just wanted confirmation from those more experienced in this. Chris
  11. 18k = IMAX 15-perf (or 36K?) 12-13k = 70MM 5-perf 6K = 35MM 4-perf 3K = 35MM 2-perf 1.8K = S16MM 1.5K = 16MM 720p = S8MM 480 = 8MM I had to share this with someone. I found so many people including myself looking for these numbers I had to compile this list. I cannot find anything close to this on the internet all in one place. Digitally, IMAX is referred to as being three times better/larger than 35mm (18k / 6K). On Film, IMAX is three times larger then 70mm and 70mm is twice as large as 35mm therefore it should be six times as large. This is of course the best possible scenario of each format. These are all comparables, they cannot be absolutely perfect. I'm comparing category to category. So much in the real world changes these numbers, for example cropping 16mm to a release format reduces the frame size and corresponding resolution or finding a camera and lens that can shoot S8mm or 8mm and come close to 720 or 480 quality.
  12. I have here a Bolex H16 Supreme model. The camera is in excellent working condition (SN# 104670) made in 1954. and has been TESTED by shooting 16mm film with it. The results were GOOD. The camera threads/loads easily and runs smoothly. All the glass/view finder are clean and clear of fungus. The camera threads/loads easily. Includes a 100' take up spool and the the Bolex Octameter Director's viewfinder. A great accessory to check your shots at 16, 25, 50, 75, 100, 150mm viewing depths. I'm asking $175. USD - OBO plus shipping. NOTE: I timed camera with a full wind and set at 24 FPS... RUN TIME: 26 sec. + - one second... The springs drives strong and consistent. NOTE: the camera has been recently serviced and lubricated and tested by the Dr.Bolex Camera Service within the past 60 days. Please feel free to ask about any details. Thanks for looking!
  13. I would like to officially introduce the amazing optical-mechanical work of Marco Kroger of the former East Germany. He is not a member of this forum and may be contacted on Facebook. Marco studied at the Technische Universität Chemnitz and he is actively adapting, modifying, converting, retro-fitting optical-mechanical R8/S8/16mm/35mm lenses/cameras. He has also created SLR/stereo ultra-widescreen 35mm photography systems. He also has built controllers, strobe/flash systems, photo-cell triggers, etc. He also utilizes the term Panascope to describe his ultrawide modifications to Regular 8, Double Super 8 and Standard 16mm transports. He alternates between the two terms but the aspect ratio is identical to UP8 based Regular 8, i.e. 3.7 x 10.3mm. He was originally inspired by my numerous UltraPan8 films online. Here is the current list of his Panascope/UltraPan8 projects, i.e. 1. Zenit Quarz Double Super 8 camera converted to Regular 8 based Panascope/UltraPan8 C-Mount w/ Newton parallax viewfinder matched to 10mm Zeiss Jena Tevidon C-MOunt lenses (APO). He rejected a Double Super 8 based transport on account of the more common availability of Regular 8 film stock, i.e. 2. Panascope/UltraPan "8 Regular 8 based projector, i.e 3. Panascope/UltaPan"8" scanner, i.e. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XHSn_H ... e=youtu.be 4. Panascope/UltraPan "8" directors viewfinder w/ C-mount. It appears to have a dioptre. To be confirmed. He recently suggested that it may used as twin-reflex C-Mount parallax viewfinder on his conversions. 5. Presently converting a Meopta Admira A (Czech Republic) 16mm electric to Panascope/UltraPan 8, i.e. His choice of cameras is based on weight (light), low cost and their general availability in Germany (common). All built over the last two years in addition to his multiple format camera projects. The year 2016 is shaping up with many options for film enthusiasts. Nicholas Kovats Toronto
  14. This forum is abound with requests for cheep 16mm cameras. Very few however broach the subject of sound. I'm looking for a camera with sound sync and a reflex view finder. I have four 100' roles in my freezer so it would be beneficial to be able to use them as apposed to a camera that only shoots 400' roles. I've shot two short films using the Canon Scoopic. Both projects where dialogue free. From what I've been told there's no good way to sync sound to them. In fact, I was told if you tried the sound would become desynced. is this true? I'm looking for a camera under $500 that has sound sync and a reflex view finder. I'm currently looking at a Bolex M5 with a reflex zoom lens but it's a bit more than i'd like to spend.
  15. Hello everyone, I'm looking for this part (see on foto) or whole viewfinder, and looking for the motor, and video-assistant, and new obturator for these cam. I can trade some of these positions on lomo lenses. Regards, Vitaly.
  16. I recently purchased some Kodak Vision3 re-cans and short-ends film stock. I’ve read differing opinions in regards to refrigerating versus freezing the film. Some have recommended to not freeze the film as it may be damaged from the process. Is there any general consensus as to the best practice for storing film? Kodak literature states that freezing film is an appropriate step for longer term storage (more than six months). I don’t know when I may use it and if the time period will exceed six months. Can I promptly freeze the film to slow the degradation process? With my film stock being re-cans and short-ends, I feel I should be more mindful of degradation, but with it not being in factory-sealed cans anymore should I avoid freezing? What are the best techniques to safely store new and opened film stock? Fridge or freezer? Should I place the cans in zipped plastic bags? Should I insert selica gel packets to reduce moisture? Any tips or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!
  17. I shot a short roll of Kodak 500T (16mm). Upon finishing I noticed, much to my dismay, that the ISO on my light meter was set to 50. So, the fast film's exposure index is rated at 500T and I overexposed by how many stops? Can either push or pull (pull, right?) processing save this spool? The negative is probably pretty dense too, right? I saw a latitude test where film was overexposed by 5+ stops and it looked nice. Hoping there's a way to remedy this problem.
  18. I am looking to buy a Canon Scoopic in good working order. MS or M preferred, but grey model considered. Would also consider other 16mm cameras - looking for easy to use, suitable for hand held work and ready to go. Electric preferred, but would consider wind up cameras (K3 etc) if price was right. I am in the UK so would prefer a UK seller, but would consider buying from abroad, subject to assurances that seller & camera are OK. Cash waiting. Thanks Glen
  19. Updated and reduced price from earlier this year. I currently have a small inventory of factory sealed cans of Kodak 16mm negative in storage in France. I had planned to shoot it myself, but the need is no longer there, so I'm willing to sell it at a discount. If you're interested, and located anywhere in Europe, it would be easy for me to ship it. I have in proper storage: 9 brand new sealed 400' cans of 7203 50D 1 brand new sealed 400' can of 7207 250D 200ft shortend of 7219 500T 100ft shortend of 7203 50D 240ft shortend of 7203 50D The new cans are 70 euros each and assuming someone wants to buy alll 10 cans I'll throw in all of the shortends for free. You have my guarantee they are just as shootable though. The shortends where made at the end of shooting days when film was still remaining in the camera mag but it needed to be loaded with a different stock for the following day. The rolls were cut with scissors in a changing bag and put back in their cans, still on a core. To reiterate: - 70€ / can (preferably would like all 10 purchased) + shipping Message me if interested.
  20. Hey guys, So I've recently purchased an old SR2 modded to shoot super 16. It's a solid package but the only thing missing is a video tap. I've contacted a guy that used to build Jurgens taps and he has the parts but it can get pretty costly. My other idea is to purchase another camera I have found (An SR1 with a tap) and install it in my SR2. The price would be far better taking this route. The bodies are almost identical as far as i know on the viewfinder/eyepiece side of things. My only concern is that the tap on the SR1 won't cover super 16. I know the old Jurgens taps would cover both but I am not sure about this one. The wonderful gentleman who is selling the SR1 has been kind enough to send me a video detailing the camera. Here's my dilemma: The tap isn't labeled and my google research to identify it (and get specs on whether it will cover S16) have come up short. Does anyone know what this tap is, its history, and if it covers S16 or not? (images attached: apologies for the quality. They were taken from a youtube link) Thanks everyone!
  21. Hello all! I've been searching the internet for 16mm courses or workshops in Europe for this autumn or next spring. I found these interesting workshops on experimental 16mm work in Australia: http://www.artistfilmworkshop.org/workshops/ Does anybody here know of something similar in Europe? Thanks in advance, Oona
  22. Hi everyone, i recently have been working with an Aaton XTR Prod camera, and the footage has light leak stripes. I wonder if someone had the same issue with this camera? Stripes have frequency, moving from bottom to the top of frame, which makes me think there is light hitting the film after the gate. My first thought was not properly attached magazine. Any other ideas?
  23. I'm curious if film schools give away old cameras. I'm interested in using a 16mm camera, but the cameras are expensive and even the cheapest (good) ones listed on eBay are usually 2-3 times the price of a Super 8 camera. I can certainly afford it, but the price might be a bit too much to start off. This is why I am interested if film schools are willing to give away (or sell for a lower price) their old cameras. Especially since most schools are focusing on digital and only limit film cameras to a few courses, perhaps it's possible. Similarly, are there any other places, like news stations, that will give away their cameras?
  24. Hello, finally got round to processing some 35mm still tri-x at home using R09 one shot and leaving if for an hour with a little agitation at the beginning and middle. Then stop and rinse. I liked the results but I fear this might be too much for smaller formats. I've got a dusty lomo tank and I was thinking it may be better with Acufine, do I need to use any other chemicals? I want to get as fine results as I can before sending them off for a telecine, also if anybody as any tips on how to store them afterwards so them don't get damaged that would be great. A long time film lover, but I'm very new to processing at home.. Thanks for any help. David
