  1. I've asked this on numerous forums, but I'm trying to get the widest opinion possible. Working freelance dop/camera at my age, I feel the need to own the camera to obtain most of my jobs. Sucks, but oh well. A lot more people rely on the DOP/Camera op to own their own gear than spending extra on rental. Which is fine. I need a camera anyways. I'm in need of a professional cinema camera that wont let me down and will last me years to come. I shoot music videos, commercials, and films., a lot of times smaller productions where I'm working solo with limited resources. Some things with big budgets and great lighting, sometimes very low budget with limited lighting. I have a budget, but I can break it if its worth it. Being young still, it would be the biggest expense. Other may think I'm crazy. But I need it for business. To make money and not just own a camera to be a big shot. Sony F5 + R5 - $35,000 Sony F55 - $28,500 Scarlet + Dragon + Motion Mount - $35,00 Epic + Motion Mount - $35,500 *Epic + Dragon + Motion Mount - $45,000 *Arri Alexa HD - $50-65,000 *WAY over my budget, but may be worth it? The Sony F55 seems to be the cheapest. Has great features (Global Shutter), but no raw, unless paired with R5 recorder bringing it to about $37,000. In a way, these cameras are almost the same price. Give or take a few. Id love to get the cheapest one and get accessories for it, which id still need. PROS: Sony F5 + R5 - high frame rates, raw Sony F55 - Cheapest, global shutter, high frame rates Scarlet + Dragon + motion mount - High DR, global shutter, raw, most popular choice Epic + Motion Mount - High frame rates, global shutter, raw, most popular choice Epic + Dragon + Motion Mount - High frame rates, High DR, global shutter, raw, most popular choice Arri Alexa - Best overall image?, raw?, high frame rates? CONS: Sony F5 + R5 - No global shutter, not as well known  Sony F55 - No Raw, not as well known  Scarlet + Dragon + motion mount - Noise, Limited frame rates, many user problems <_< Epic + Motion Mount - Noise, many user problems <_< Epic + Dragon + Motion Mount - Noise, many user problems, High in price! :( Arri Alexa - unknown about arriraw, no global shutter, HIGHEST in price  Id get the Sony, F55 or F5 + R5, but it isnt that well known. Isnt as in demand as I hoped for. If its all quiet and not used for cinema as much as broadcast, Id probably want to go a different route like RED as they are well known and used in cinema primarily. But performance is a let down.
  2. Hey all, Question: I noticed when I applied 250 half white Lee diffusion filter on the barn doors of my Arri 1k, that it changed the color of the light even more yellow. Despite the fact that the camera was balanced for tungsten. It was even worse when I doubled up, the diffusion. This effect may or may not have happened when I used a dimmer to lower the light power, it had the same effect. If this is normal, this will make color balancing a nightmare. The lights were not on for that long, say half hour or so. Cheers, Mike

  4. Hello! This is my first post here on the forum and I would like to begin it by thanking everyone who posts on here; this forum has been a huge source of information for me, basically like the film school I couldn't afford, so yeah thanks everyone. I just recently acquired an Arri 2c, one that was advertised by the seller as a high speed model. It has the tachometer that reads up to 80fps, but from doing research on this forum and others, I understand that it is possible to attach that tach to a non high speed model. I've read that the only fool-proof way of determining if the camera is an actual high speed model is by the presence of four extra screws on the film gate that can adjust the pressure of the gate. But having been unable to find another picture of an Arri 2c gate to compare mine too, I'm unsure if the screws on my gate are the high speed ones or just the standard. Here's a pic of the gate on my 2c: Is this the high speed gate? And if so, is the combination of the gate and the 80fps tach enough to pretty much guarantee this is definitely a high speed model and is safe to run at 80fps? Just want to be sure, as I have a high speed motor on the way and would like to be sure of what I'm dealing with. Speaking of the high speed motor, I've read that it needs 32v to run at 80fps. At the risk of sounding silly, how exactly do I acquire 32v of power? I can't seem to find any 32v batteries that can connect to the high speed motor. (The cable for my motor has a 4 pin XLR). Is it a case where I would need to have a battery specially fashioned? Anyone who has any experience running a 2c at high frame rates, your help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  13. As a side project we have created a little free tool called "metavisor" to directly view and extract metadata of Arri Raw files inside your web browsers with simple Drag and Drop technology Link to metavisor: metavisor I would love to get some feedback from the pros here: What you think about the tool? What would you like to be improved? How important is viewing and export of metadata to you? Is the current tool with installation (Meta Extract) provided by Arri too cumbersome to use? What free webtool would you like to see concerning production / postproduction / vfx ? The tool is still in beta phase. We are also planning to extend the functionality to the other capture formats the Alexa supports, RED, Sony's cameras and connect the vfx/lens data information to our database and make it available to the digital workflow community. Also if you ever imagined a nice tool that everyone should be able to use for free in our industry - just drop us a line (metavisor@nablavfx.com). Usually people with good ideas and interesting problems are industry professionals ;) Big thanks to everyone giving some feedback ! We really appreciate your time. 14. Hello all, I am looking for an Arri3 super35 Ground Glass with 1.85 markings. I have recently been in contact with Visual Products who don't have them, and Shurcotools who manufacture them in the US, but they could not guarantee me shipment on time (Im leaving for a shoot in Africa at the end of the month and I cannot buy it unless I can get it before this time). In any case - anybody who manufactures/ sells these ground glasses, preferably in Europe? Thanks!

  18. First off, I want to say thank you to all the people who contribute to this forum - I’ve been lurking around for quite some time without posting much. You know the old adage... “If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all”... Well, by nice I mean something that could further the discussions - but quite often I find the answers before needing to ask! Anyway, I just got myself a s16mm Arriflex SR2 (PL mount), and I'm looking into prime lens options. I have a collection of 35mm and above format primes, but none suitable for this smaller gauge (they can obviously cover it but finding a good wide/normal lens out of my collection is a stretch). I’ve read in various places that some 16mm format lenses aren't compatible - they cover it but don’t physically fit with the Arri SRII or SR1. My question; what prime lenses which cover and/or are designed for super16 are compatible with my SR2 in the wide to normal focal lengths. I'm not looking for the newest and greatest optics available, but instead some quality vintage glass with character. Old lenses from the likes of Cooke, Schneider, Zeiss, Meyer, and probably any old German or Russian knockoff's interest me. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
  19. Cory Zapatka

    Pilotone

Heading into the field shortly to shoot some sync sound camera tests-- I'm interested in trying to use as much of my "new" camera as possible, including the Pilotone and the start mark system. Has anybody had success recording this Pilotone, especially going to a digital recorder? If it's possible, I'd love to be pointed in the right direction for cables, 5-pin DIN to 3-pin male XLR. Thanks!
  20. My brother and I own a modified Arri SR1 and would like to get some accessories for it. I apologize in advanced- we are more familiar with lighting and grip than with camera. We are looking for the following items: -New right handle w/trigger (we have one, but the trigger is sticky so we'd like to find a new one, possibly a left handle as well) -Back body cap (right now we keep a magazine on it to keep it covered up) -Shoulder pad (we could build our own little pad but were hoping to find something that can mount tot he camera) Also looking for a vintage tripod and head too if anyone knows any places in LA (or San Francisco) that sells old film camera parts and accessories. Thanks! -Phill Matarrese
  21. For sale here is one of Tobin's last (newest) crystal motors ever made for the Arri 16S or 16M. Runs forwards only. Crystal speeds: 12, 20, 24, 25, 30, 40, 50 fps. This was bought new directly from Tobin and has only been run to test a few of times. More information from the Tobin website (a pdf download link) http://www.tobincinemasystems.com/TCS_Public_PDF/TXM22A.pdf Please see my other listings, I'm moving and selling a bunch of gear. Available for $600 O.B.O! Available for pick up in West Hollywood through this Saturday. 22. I'm selling my very rare Arriflex 16 Fiberglass Blimp. This is for use with either a 16S or a 16M and and mounting plates for both are included. This was purchased a few years ago from forum member Tim Carroll who also ran the great website www.arri16s.com. Tim did a beautiful job of restoring this gorgeous piece of filmmaking history. The lens pictured is not included. The 16M camera and mag is not included, although they are for sale separately (see separate listing). They are in these photos only to demonstrate how a camera would fit inside the blimp. I also am separately selling a Tobin TXM-22A motor that would go very well with this blimp. The blimp's shutter advance knob seems just a few mm too short to reach the Tobin's knob, so you may want to fashion an extension on the rubber knob that reaches toward the motor on the inside of the blimp. One of the two latches is broken on the wooden shipping case but everything made it to me ok with that broken and it's always held shut firmly enough with just the one latch. Also, the power cable that connects a 12V battery (4-pin Cannon) to the outside of the blimp will need to be rewired if you intend to use the blimp for anything besides decoration. This cable provides power for the camera inside to run, as well as power for the interior lightbulbs so you can push buttons and see things inside like the fps tachometer. The cable was just old and brittle and started melting in one spot (a couple of photos are included). The connectors both look fine, so I would guess a technician could make you a replacement cable or two. I just haven't had time to get that done. The seals on the two doors (the top magazine door and the side camera body door) don't seem quite as tight as they were a few years ago so that may be one other thing to have checked if you intend to use it for the purpose it was designed. When I first got this from Tim, it did an amazing job of silencing a very noisy 16S, but I have not tested it recently. The thought that went into the intricate design of this blimp is really impressive. It is in excellent condition. I would love to keep this as decoration for my apartment but I'm moving and I know I just won't have space, so I'm selling it. $800 O.B.O. Please send me a PM if interested. It's available to see in West Hollywood through Saturday. If that's too soon, I can coordinate another time for you to check it out. For convenience, preference will be given if there is a buyer in the LA area who will pick up in person and pay cash. Pictures! http://www.flickr.com/photos/95212445@N02/sets/72157633332383091/ Thanks for looking! Rich
  23. Ok, here's the deal. Consider this a listing for a great Tobin Crystal TXM-22 motor. It comes with a camera, but just think of that as a bonus since the camera may not be worth a whole bunch. I've never shot with it, or with the included mags. I bought it off Craigslist from a DP/Operator on the other side of the country about a year or two ago and one technician who looked at it told me some of the design choices in converting this camera to S16 looked risky and shooting with it may not be worth the risk. I've heard this is one of two or three 16S cameras converted to S16/PL mount by Van Diemen in the UK. It seemed to run fine and the previous owner promised he shot lots of footage on it with no problems so maybe I'm just being paranoid. But! It came with this awesome motor. I actually like it better than the final refinement, the TXM-22A, since the "A" model can't run in reverse. Also included are two of the rare 200' mags for the 16S, although as I mentioned, I never tested them, so this is all "AS IS". There are also two 400' 16S mags. Each mag has it's own torque motor, and I was told by the person I bought these from that they've all been upgraded to be 12V compatible. The camera has been upgraded with a 4-pin Cannon (aka XLR) power connector instead of the old Arri 2-pin "banana plug". It's also been fitted with a 80fps max tachometer (I believe taken from an Arri 2C H.S.) There is no case for the four mags. The camera body case is a bit old looking but still latches closed firmly. The foam is a bit of a mess. No power cables or batteries or lenses are included. Selling for only $800!!! Available to see in West Hollywood through this Saturday. After that, get in touch and I can coordinate a time when you can check it out. For convenience, preference will be given if there is a buyer in the LA area who will pick up in person and pay cash. 24. Hello! Last year I was a part of a student production called "Punctum Temporis". A 10-minute, no dialogue, short film. My first time operating a Red One camera, so I believe I might could have gotten more out of it. Although I co-directed and wrote, I would like get some feedback on my cinematography for this one, as this is the branch I really want do continue doing. This was a small production with only eight crew members, so I ran the lighting and camera operating myself, while my camera assistant pulled the focus. Would appreciate any feedback!
