This act was a supplement to the Communications Act of 1934, which required broadcasters to give equal airtime to candidates running in elections. 1951: I Love Lucy, sponsored by Philip Morris, was born. The half-hour sitcom ranked as the number one program in the nation for four of its first six full seasons. 1951: On June 21, CBS broadcasted the first color program. As mentioned above, CBS’s color system only worked with a small number of TVs across America. Only 12 customers across America could see the first color TV broadcast. 12 million other TVs were blank for this program. 1952: Bob Hope takes his comedy from radio to TV as The Bob Hope Show debuts in October, 1952. 1952: By the end of 1952, TVs could be found in 20 million households across America, a rise of 33% from the previous year. I'm working on the pre-production of a commercial and I'm trying to sell the idea of making a pice where there is an actor speaking to camera while background props change creating diferente rooms and locations. Something similar to the well-known Old spice Tv commercial "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like". I can't find any other commercials done with the same technique, I would be very grateful to anyone who can remember any. Thank you very much!! really appreciate it!!!

  6. I am trying to find if any major tv series were broadcast in scope aspect ratio? I know some shows such as The Walking Dead and True Detective s02 were shot anamorphic with a 16:9 extraction, but looking on line I was not able to find any series broadcast in scope except a british show called Broadchurch which apparently was shot anamorphic for 2:1 screening. Also the great doco Wild Wild Country was shot scope (seems anamorphic). Any other thoughts?
  7. I watched the first episode, now the second. Looks good. Feels very modern, makes the previous ST's "outdated" :) (except J.J's Trek and after). It is entertaining for me, won't comment/hair-split on story, character, acting... Maybe it needs some time to fine tune, find its footing. Hell, even when i rewatched TNG form start i felt Picard was "wobbly". Your thoughts? PS: Before posting this i finished the second - it IS VERY promising. At the end of it is a trailer segment on what awaits in this season.

  9. Hey guys, I haven’t been on here for a while. I’m looking for some advice. Sorry if this is long winded…It’s been in my head for a while. I’m a Scottish DP based in Hong Kong and I’m thinking about relocating back to the UK & trying to get into production work. A bit about me : I have an undergrad in Film from 20 years ago and about 10+ years experience in the camera side of production…everything from AC to Gaffer to DP but mainly on small productions - loadsa of Short films, Indie Music Vids & tons of corporates. (I’ve shot corporates & Indie stuff in about 12 different countries.) I haven’t shot very regularly for a few years after a back injury took me out & I ended up getting a very well paid job in another field. When I recovered I didn’t want to continue shooting corporate jobs but I have been teaching Cinematography at a Film School part time and that’s fired me up again. I’ve always wanted to work in the scripted TV/Film drama genre but there just aren’t many opportunities here in Honkers for non-locals and I feel like there are no options to progress – I really should have left 10 years ago. I’m single, getting on a bit - 40+, female with no strings attached…no debts etc... So my question : How would someone with my years of filming experience but no real 'industry' experience fair in the UK film production scene? I've lived outside the UK for about 17 years so I’m considering taking an MA in Cinematography partly to acclimatize myself back into the country & partly to network for industry contacts plus I do enjoy teaching film and Masters would allow me to teach college classes if things didn’t work out.... BUT I’m not sure if I should go this route? It’s quite a lot of money to put out…OR …would I be better keeping my money to support myself while I just try to network on my own to get contacts & production jobs. In terms of work I have no delusions of turning up & getting DP work and I would have no prob starting at the bottom of a cam dept or even a rental house, I just want to work in the camera dept with good crews but is it realistic for someone in my position and age to try to re-start a career that's been on & off for 2 decades & what route do I take? Thanks for any thoughts or advice...harsh, truthful or difficult...I'd like to hear peoples honest opinions so i can make an informed decision...

Hey Guys, So i've been tasked in DoP'ing a music video next month and at the directors request, he want's that 70's style look, as we shall be re-creating a 'top of the pops' style performance for the band. My references for this sort of thing are basically anything Bruno mars has put out over the past 4 years: Bruno Mars - Treasure: Bruno Mars - When I Was Your Man: and... Pheonix - J Boy: Ideally, due to budget restraints, it would have to be digital and as we'll be renting off a friend for a silly price, so it will most probably be an Epic. However i'm aware 16mm would of been ideal for this. So my question is, setting aside camera movement etc, what would you suggest for the 'look'? I'm quite set on hiring some Tiffen star filters for the star effects and throwing a 1/2 pro mist in the mix to bloom the highlights on an old vintage zoom, but what would you suggest for de-grading the quality of the image? LOS ANGELES (September 15, 2016) - The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) has set February 4, 2017, as the date for their 31st Annual Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography. Daryn Okada, ASC will serve as awards chair, with Lowell Peterson, ASC, as co-chairman. The ceremony will take place at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland. The ASC will honor excellence in feature film and television cinematography, along with recognizing several cinematographers and filmmakers for their contributions to the art and craft of filmmaking throughout their career. The organization has also officially opened the submission process for the television competition. The ASC is now accepting entries in three categories: (1) Episode of a Television Series - Commercial; (2) Episode of a Television Series - Non Commercial; and (3) TV Movie/Miniseries/Pilot. The deadline for submissions is November 1 by 5 p.m. (PT). To qualify for the ASC TV awards, shows must have a premiere broadcast date in the United States between November 1, 2015, and October 31, 2016. I'm due to be flying out to shoot a music vid in the next few weeks on the Arri Alexa Mini - I thought I'd pick the community brain to see if anyone has any great suggestions for lens choices to achieve the following kind of look.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gtdpnKbT10 We've had to rule out the option of shooting VHS/film/TV cameras etc. So I've got to get as close as I can using the right sort of lens and filters (plus there'll be haze too which'll help) - we'll be hiring in LA, so if anyone suggest a particular vintage lens that's hard to get hold of then it'd be great to know if you know of a local rental house that may stock it? The main things we're looking to achieve are - As close to the look as possible using lens/filters/haze/grade - The ability to zoom mid shot, all adding to that retro effect, so ideally something with a large zoom range and ideally parfocal. At the moment I'm thinking an Angenieux 24-290 purely because of the range - I know she's a beast but I'll be on sticks the whole time. Plus something like a Glimmerglass 1/2 or 1 or possibly even a Hollywood Star filter to really make those light sources pop. I've not used nets before, so I'm a bit hesitant to experiment too much on the job so ideally glass suggestion if possible :-) Are there any watchouts I should be aware of? I've learnt a huge amount from you guys so it'd be really great to get the forums advice and ideas :-) Huge thanks in advance, Matt.

  15. Hi, I am a student at Birmingham City University and am gathering some primary research. I am currently writing a short thesis on the idea that film production is moving towards large budget TV series productions such as House of Cards, Breaking Bad and Gotham. This could mainly be due to the way consumers receive their media content online. With the substantial transfer from cinema and TV spectatorship to online streaming and distributors such Netflix and Sky. I wondering whether people agreed there is a significant change from film production to high profile TV Productions in relation to the consumers move towards online distributors such as Netflix? Hello to all, I need to shoot an LED TV, the content will be added in post production so it needs to be a clean Green for keying, however I did some tests and the Moire Patterns that appear are unbearable. Im shooting on the Red Dragon so it is not a compression issue. Any recommendations on how to deal with the problem? The patterns disappear the second it's slightly soft, but I rather keeping the television in focus. Thanks! J.

I have a cousin who's currently working to produce a programme (pitch an idea for them), that would be play on tv. but they (tv station) wanted to discuss the salary when he comes up with an idea they want to make. basically they want to collaborate with him. so his question is: 1) How much should he get paid if he works as a (writer/director/cinematographer), as the tv station want to discuss that with him. how much is the usual pay for ppl in that position? btw, he has graduated from university (he's experienced in making film etc, few of his films had gotten into festivals as well) 2) Do he need to sign a contract with the station for his idea? (e.g. if he wants to also put the show on his youtube account to help show his works) 3) and how to protect his idea so the tv station won't steal it from him, as he seems worried about that.
  18. Hi everyone. I'm not exactly a student or a new filmmaker, but I am closer to a new filmmaker, than a professional DP, so that's why I'm posting here. Apologies to moderators if it's in the wrong section. I'm filming a low budget car commercial for a small community tv channel and I am wondering what the best options are to film a moving car. I basically want to be able to make the most out of a little to no budget as possible, whether using guerilla style filmmaking or out the box ideas, I need some guidance. I want basically get multiple moving angles of a car driving on the road. My options so far are: Film the car out the window from another car. Use a pillow as a vibration/shake absorber while holding the camera on the door through the window opening. My angles and height are very restricted and I can only pan very slightly. Film the the car from the back of a pickup truck (in SA, we call these vans), with a little jib to get some dynamic movement, however while this option provides the most creative shot options, it could also provide me with, you know, death. So I'm not really considering this as an option, but if I found a way to safely set this up then I would do it. Film the car by sticking my camera out of the window and holding the top handle. I cannot hire a 3-axist gimbal to fit my FS700 in my city but I could use my Glidecam, however I don't have much confidence in this option. So you see, I am basically lost for options here. Every bts video I have seen of a car commercial has mind blowingly expensive rigs that are built into vehicles. I need some cheaper options. Thanks!

Dream Makers starts online then adds cable TV broadcast and finally adds movie theaters across America for the show finale’. Each episode—hosted by Roger Rohatgi—features the contestants’ pitches, tasks unique to the movie industry that have to be completed by a certain deadline and stories about the personal journey about how they got to where they are today. Our judges will give their opinion about who they think are best suited to be on the team but the audience has the last say as to who gets to stay on the show and make it to the Dream Makers movie making team. Open audition sign ups run through the end of December 2013. After the contestants sign up they will make pitch videos about themselves to show why they should be on the show. Once the audition pitch videos are evaluated, the semi-finalists will be notified within a few days whether or not they will be included on the show. During January of 2014 our judges will select contestants from the nationwide audition process to compete for the movie making positions. 20 semi- finalists will be chosen in January.   22. If you could pick one title sequence, such as from a T.V. show or a movie, which one would you pick? Why would you pick it and why do you like it so much? Mine, at this moment, is the opening sequence for the 2001-2005 HBO series Six Feet Under. Every scene of that opening is a work of art. It is all reflections, and a wonderful mix of out of focus/focus. Slight dissolve magic. Beautiful things make me happy, which is why I want to get into this business. I want to make people feel the things I feel from a good piece of film.

Hi everyone, in few days I'm gonna show my short film to a commission for my graduation... now, until now I just worked on my laptop, never tried to see the result on TV, but as soon as I did it... I really freaked out! watching the film on my laptop, everything is good: high quality definition, bluish and desaturated look which is exactly what I wanted to achieve, no digital noise... when I saw it on TV, it was yellowish and very saturated, really bad definition with a LOT of digital noise... I don't really know what to do, my school career will be probably influenced by this project... can someone help with that? do you think I'm doing something wrong linking the PC to the TV, or is it normal all that noise?? I used a RGB cable to link the PC to the TV, and I'm using premiere pro cs6 to edit... is there something I can do in the export settings to have a really good HD product once it is shown on TV, or on a big screen? Please help, I will be really grateful for any kind of answer :(
