Randy J Tomlinson Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 I only wish i could be on that set. And if it's only as a runner, i'd kill for that *sigh*
Travis Gray Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 I only wish i could be on that set. And if it's only as a runner, i'd kill for that *sigh* That'd be pretty awful. "Man Runs Around On Star Wars Set; Gets 35 to Life"
Randy J Tomlinson Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 That'd be pretty awful. "Man Runs Around On Star Wars Set; Gets 35 to Life" Travis... don't take that literally. it's a "thing" i use to say. I should have said: I'd do anything to be on that set.
David Nethery Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 A bit off-topic, but this came to my attention today: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/star-wars-cinematographer-gilbert-taylor-dies-613654 "Gilbert Taylor, the famed British cinematographer who shot the first Star Wars film for George Lucas, Dr. Strangelove for Stanley Kubrick, Repulsion for Roman Polanski and The Beatles' A Hard Day's Night, has died. He was 99."
David Nethery Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 I also heard it will be making heavy use of models, sets and real locations too. They are trying to get back to the spirit of the originals and so are going to be looking for anything that can take them in that direction. I hear the original sets are about to be destroyed by huge sand dunes tho. Freya "Old school" miniature models and forced perspective can give great results. http://petapixel.com/2013/08/23/using-toys-and-forced-perspective-to-get-professional-low-budget-visual-effects/ http://vashivisuals.com/visual-effects-low-budget-filmmaking/
Shawn Martin Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Looks like the "next" film Fong was talking about is Batman vs. Superman. If so, it's nice that they're continuing the anamorphic look for both those franchises.
Sean Cox Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 One of my current lecturers had spoken to somebody at the studios who had heard the same, along with comments made here, I would suspect they are planning to use film
John Holland Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 They are using film ! 35 and 65mm no doubt about it . 1
Anthony Schilling Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Almost everyone I know commented on how they preferred the models and sets of the original trilogy as opposed to CGI. I happy it will be on film and hopefully use models and sets. I they will use more than just 5219? Imagine areal 65mm shots of alien landscapes on 50D.
Mei Lewis Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 According to Reddit therere are Custom blacked-out Panavision Panaflex XL film cameras that will be used for Star Wars VII. The A camera is nicknamed "Deathstar" and B camera is the "Millennium Falcon".
Reuel Gomez Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 According to Reddit therere are I wonder if it's something that will be rented out after production of Ep.'s 7-9 are completed or just left in a museum to rot.
dio zafi Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 (edited) I spoke to a person in the know from lets say the biggest camera equipment company there is about 2 months ago, yes film 35mm and 65mm . panavision very nice!! (i want to shoot all my projects on 35mm…with this camera or arri LT, which I could actually buy..and I'm saving for) Edited April 13, 2014 by dio zafi
Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted April 14, 2014 Premium Member Posted April 14, 2014 You can also rent an LT from Panavision-- if that's what you want, since in their case you generally are renting the lenses more so than the body.
Premium Member Will Montgomery Posted May 13, 2014 Premium Member Posted May 13, 2014 Last time I spoke to Panavision they said they were sending their 35mm cameras that were used on big movies to the directors or DP's of the films as a thank you (shot in the 70's & 80's). Guess they held onto some of their latest 35mm cameras.
Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted May 13, 2014 Premium Member Posted May 13, 2014 A couple of companies at the BSC show earlier this year had huge Panathings on various bits of grip equipment as demonstration cameras. Apparently there's no shortage of them gathering dust on shelves, sad as it is in some ways. P
John Holland Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Phil you are a reverse luddite .I watched the current Spider Man 2 film last week at a BSC show . Shot on film looked fantastic ,the Director had shot No.1 on Epic and was very unhappy with the look Dan Mindel ASC/BSC who shot this one did a Q+A after and said the Director now has a clause in future contracts that he will only shoot on film . I hated the movie to long and can i say Boring ? Not my kind of film.

Premium Member Matthew W. Phillips Posted May 13, 2014 Premium Member Posted May 13, 2014 +100 we should all put the "film clause" in our contracts I tried this with the wife (My other producer) and it worked. She finally gave in. It took crying and whining though instead of demanding.
Emmanuel Lariviere Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 https://twitter.com/bad_robot/status/486628757780721664/photo/1 IMAX on set.
freddie bonfanti Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Ahem, rigging crew! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2691818/The-phantom-film-set-Tantalising-glimpse-new-Star-Wars-movie-locations-crew-moves-Forest-Dean-Gloucestershire-shoot.html
Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted July 20, 2014 Premium Member Posted July 20, 2014 With usual caveats regarding believing a word of what's said in the Daily Fail: The value of the discarded equipment is probably more than the entire production budget of the last thing I shot. My respect for the aforementioned rigging crew on this, who I think we can assume were of the very highly paid apple-box-chainsmoking variety of union stalwarts, is of course deepened no end. P
Premium Member Satsuki Murashige Posted July 20, 2014 Premium Member Posted July 20, 2014 I doubt G&E just forgot and left that stuff behind, the distro box is still plugged in. They probably left it for a separate wrap crew, no reason to keep the main unit on the clock when wrapping a big location can take a day or more.
John Holland Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Yep I agree with Satsuki, you cant belive anything that is printed in the rag known as The Mail.
freddie bonfanti Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 John, the Mail is not my first choice when it comes to printed matter, however it is often rich of amusing behind the scenes gems (just like the Telegraph) when it comes to major motion pictures filmed in london. I enjoy flicking through and seeing my colleagues or myself in it from time to time. it's a funny old game Anyway, regardless of what publication it is, the gear is left exposed to the elements and not bagged properly (including the non water proof 125> 63a FDU's) and if there was no security around, which seems to be the case, all that would have been up for grabs. I'm sure the very competent rigging crew of Ep VII would have polished it all up by now
Brian Drysdale Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 An amusing side story on the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-29144135
